First World War Experience

As Henry’s service records have not survived the only record we have of his war service is from the local newspapers. Similarly, the Medal Rolls Index does not give definite details of this Henry’s medals.

On 19th September 1914 a photograph of seven postmen appeared in one of the local newspapers headed “Bexhill Post Office has contributed 14 to the total of 20,971 employees with the Forces”.

Four months later (on 23.1.1915) the following article appeared in another local newspaper:

“Lance Corporal Gasson, attached to the Army Service Corps now on duty in France, was in Bexhill during the week. He was granted 100 hours leave, and spent the time with his relatives in Windsor-road. L/C Gasson joined his regiment in August and left for the Front soon afterwards.”
