In 1904 Charles married Ella Allen (1883-1959) in Battle.  They had one child – Albert John Blackwell (1908 – ).  In 1911 the family were living at 38 Havelock Road, Bexhill.

Charles died in Bexhill Hospital on 11th March 1939 and his home address was 15 Bayencourt South Bexhill-on-Sea.  He left an estate of £562.15s.10d. to his widow, Ella.

First World War Experience

From the local newspapers we know that Charles had enlisted by September 1914.  A group photograph of the Post Office staff serving appeared on 19th September of that year.

When he enlisted Charles was 27 years 5 months old and was then living at 7 Sackville Road, Bexhill. He was 5’ 6” tall with a chest measurement of 34” – expanded by 2½”.

He was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal
