Family Information
Parents:- George Nash, born 1869 in St. Luke’s, London, died in 1906 in Camberwell, and Eliza Nash, born 1870 in Holloway. Eliza remarried Frank Cruttenden of 10 Windsor Road, the January quarter of 1910. In 1891 George and Eliza were living at 80 Central Road, East Finsbury. George was a Basket Porter and Eliza was working as a Liner.
First World War Experience
Herbert signed up on 21st July 1915 and, as he stated that he preferred the Navy, he was posted to the R.N.A.S. His mother, of course, was given as his next of kin. He is shown, on his attestation form, to be 5’ 8½” tall, with a chest of 35”, of fresh complexion, with hazel eyes and fair hair.
He had several promotions:-
21.7.11915 Air Mechanic II Grade (E)
15.12.1916 Air Mechanic I Grade (ELEC)
1.11.1917 Leading Mechanic (ELEC)
1.4.1918 Tsfd. R.A.F. Cpl. Mech. He went to Eastchurch then and on 2.2.1919 was moved to Crystal Palace.
He had a medical examination of 30th July 1918 at Eastchurch and was passed as Category A. in the August of the same year, on 21st August, he was classed as ‘Sturdy’.
