Family Information
No definite information can be gleaned about Walter’s family. He gives his next of kin on his attestation form as John Eveleigh but a newspaper report at Walter’s wedding says his father is Mr. W. H. Eveleigh. In 1911 he was working as a Servant in the Sackville Hotel, Bexhill on Sea.
We do know, however, that Walter married Ethel May King in August 1919. No children of the union can be found.
First World War Experience
Walter enlisted on 7th November 1914 when he was 19 years 1 month old. He was 5’ 6” tall, with a chest measurement of 33½”, good vision in both eyes, and of good physical development. He was posted to Eastern Command and saw service in both France and Salonika.
Walter was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
