Family Information
Parents: George Richardson Casterton (1859-) and Elizabeth Casterton, nee Shadbolt (1859-).
Siblings: Muriel Casterton, b. 1888; Abgemond Casterton, b. 1891; Georgiana Casterton (1900-1902).
In 1911 Oliver was living at 12 Endwell Road, Bexhill on Sea. On 23rd September 1918 he married Sarah Rosina Charlton Deacon at the Presbyterian Church, Aldershot.
First World War Experience
Oliver enlisted on 13th November 1915 whilst living at 2 Wilton Road. He was 31 years and 6 months old, 5’ 5¾” tall, weighed 119lbs, and had a chest measurement of 33” – expanded by 3”. He had one vaccination mark on his left arm, had 6/60 vision in both eyes, was of the Presbyterian denomination, and was working as a Confidential Clerk in a Gas Company.
A notice appeared on 27th October 1917 in a local newspaper which read:
“Sergeant O. G. T. Casterton, Army Service Corps, was at Bexhill during the weekend. He was formerly on the staff of the Bexhill Water and Gas Company, and for the past 18 months has been engaged on the administration staff of the A.S.C.”
Oliver saw service in the Murmansk Theatre of War and on 10th October 1918 left for North Russia – not quite a month of getting married! He was awarded both the Victory Medal and the British War Medal.
